MVS-Themen: Dictionary of the Mainframe World: Abbreviations, Acronyms, and Definitions

What is a Mainframe?
Having read John Campbell's "What is a Mainframe", and having been asked this question myself many times I would like to propose a more illuminating definition. First, however, some very brief biographical info. I first became interested in computing machines as a teenager. In those days the 2nd generation was rapidly drawing to a close and System/360 was about to change the computing landscape. My first programming experience was in high school, where my class had access to a very fast IBM 7094-II (and before you ask, no, my high school did not have its own 7094; we were allowed limited use of one of MIT's systems). In college I majored in math, primarily because computer science as a major was still about 4 years in the future. Nevertheless, my first love has always been computing machines, and I have invested a lifetime of study and labor in this industry. I have worked with all platforms except vector processing based supercomputers. My favorite has always been, and remains to this day, the mainframe.

utm - Searle, John Rogers - The Chinese room argument

(E?)(L?) http://www.utm.edu/research/iep/c/chineser.htm
John Searle's (1980a) thought experiment and associated (1984) derivation - is one of the best known and widely credited counters to claims of artificial intelligence (AI), i.e., to claims that computers do or at least can (someday might) think. According to Searle's original presentation, the argument is based on two truths: brains cause minds, and syntax doesn't suffice for semantics. Its target, Searle dubs "strong AI": "according to strong AI," according to Searle, "the computer is not merely a tool in the study of the mind, rather the appropriately programmed computer really is a mind in the sense that computers given the right programs can be literally said to understand and have other cognitive states" (1980a, p. 417). Searle contrasts "strong AI" to "weak AI". According to weak AI, according to Searle, computers just simulate thought, their seeming understanding isn't real (just as-if) understanding, their seeming calculation as-if calculation, etc.; nevertheless, computer simulation is useful for studying the mind (as for studying the weather and other things).

Fachinformationen von Systemspezialisten aus der ganzen Welt für MVS, CICS, DB/2, RACF, AIX, TCP/SNA, ORACLE, NT.

Marktforschung, technischen Untersuchungen; Informationssysteme für Grossunternehmen; Zeitschriften, Berichte, Konferenzen, Seminare, Internetseite;

The Glossary is based on The Handbook of IBM Terminology, which Xephon published in printed form, annually or twice-yearly, from 1989 to 1999. It has been heavily revised, but does still retain a strong IBM orientation. We plan to extend it to cover other suppliers' systems, both hardware and software, as well as incorporating more general industry terms; however, we aim to retain its focus on corporate information systems, and not to dilute it with terminology from consumer systems, electronics, academic computer theory, or other non-commercial sectors.
The Glossary currently contains definitions for just over 6,000 terms.

Every issue of RACF Update is packed with ideas for improving RACF - and all the technical details you need to put the ideas into practice are provided too.

In fact, up to 80 percent of the nation's data is being stored and processed on mainframe computers, With that in mind, "z/Journal" is dedicated to providing useful, reliable, and interesting information on a wide variety of topics directly relevant to IT professionals using IBM "zSeries" and "S/390" systems.
