Engl. "neither hide nor hair" (1857) = dt. "keine Spur (von etwas / jemandem)" hat auch eine wörtliche Entsprechung "weder Haut noch Haar". Der Ausdruck geht zurück auf einen älteren Ausdruck "in hide and hair" = "mit Haut und Haaren", der in Schlachthäusern und bei der Jagd üblich war. Engl. "hide" = dt. "Haut", engl. "hair" = dt. "Haar", "Pelz", "Fell" eines Tieres stehen als Metapher für das ganze Tier.
