Russian is the most important of the Slavic languages, both as to the number of speakers and to the cultural influence. It has been the common means of communication among people living in the republics which formerly composed the USSR. Russian is related to Polish, Czech, Slovak, Slovenian, Serbo-Croatian, Macedonian and Bulgarian. Russian used the 33-character Cyrillic alphabet, based to a degree on the Greek alphabet.
