Desertec (W3)
"Desertec" setzt sich zusammen aus engl. "desert" = dt. "Wüste" und engl. "tec" für engl. "technology". Die "Desertec Industrial Initiative" ("DII") wurde im Juli 2009 von Siemens, RWE und E.on gegründet. Seither haben sich weitere Großunternehmen dem Projekt angeschlossen.

Auf Initiative der Non-Profit-Organisation "DESERTEC Foundation", die 2008 gegründet wurde, um das DESERTEC Konzept weltweit zu realisieren und der Munich Re, des weltgrößten Rückversicherungskonzerns, wurde im Juli 2009 die "DESERTEC Industrial Initiative" ("Dii") ins Leben gerufen. Die Initiative hat das Ziel, die Rahmenbedinungen für eine beschleunigte des Umsetzung des DESERTEC-Konzepts in EUMENA (Europe, Middle East, Nordafrika) zu schaffen. Am 30. Oktober 2009 wurde dazu in München die Dii GmbH gegründet.
Gründungsgesellschafter der Dii GmbH sind die DESERTEC Foundation und 12 Unternehmen. Durch die Aufnahme weiterer Gesellschafter sowie Assoziierter Partner aus Südeuropa und Nordafrika wird die Basis der Dii GmbH in Zukunft noch erweitert werden.

By far the largest, technically accessible source of energy on the planet is to be found in the deserts around the equatorial regions of the earth. The DESERTEC Concept is designed to bring "deserts" and existing "technology" into service to improve global security of energy, water and the climate. DESERTEC stands for a globally applicable solution for limiting CO2 emissions by a rapid expansion of renewable energies.

The DESERTEC Foundation (DF) will be a source of knowledge and expertise about all matters relating to the DESERTEC Concept including political, social, industrial, legal, and regulatory aspects. We also encourage any research and development in any of these fields to better the DESERTEC concept.
The DF may serve as an intermediary and advisor for parties involved in DESERTEC projects. The DF will bring together and provide advice for commercial organizations and national governments that wish to establish DESERTEC projects.
The DF will define standards for environmental protection and social responsibility in the execution of DESERTEC projects. It will require adherence to those standards amongst organizations that are and are not affiliated to the DF.
