The best time for the first manned mission to Mars will be in 2014, says James Longuski of Purdue University in the US.
This is because the position of the planets will provide an escape route back to Earth in the event of an accident.
Because of an alignment of Earth, Mars and Venus, a so-called gravitational slingshot manoeuvre would take astronauts to Mars and, if needed, bring them home safely.
According to Professor Longuski, the emergency flight path would only be possible if the spacecraft was launched within a few days of 14 January 2014.
Via Venus
Orbital calculations show that no similar escape option exists for at least a decade before or after 2014. This means that astronauts might be forced to attempt a landing on Mars even if their spacecraft became crippled in an accident on the way to Mars.
"This trajectory is remarkably fortuitous as it does not exist for many years prior to or after the 2014 date," Professor Longuski said.
Nasa has also identified 2014 as a possible launch date for the first human mission to Mars in a 1997 study.
Professor Longuski discovered that the safest route to take would be one that permitted a quick return trip, via Venus, in case of an accident that forced the Mars landing to be aborted.
If that happened, the Martian gravity would change the spacecraft's trajectory, hurling it toward Venus, where another gravity assist would return the spacecraft back to Earth.
The gravity assist would allow a safe return to Earth even if the spacecraft's main rocket engine failed, Professor Longuski said.
Currently, Nasa has small-scale studies but no plans for a manned mission to Mars. Many experts say that it is too late to organise a mission in 2014. But the advantages of that date may force Nasa to look again at manned flights to Mars

GIS - Geographical Information System - Geographic Information System
A computer system for capturing, storing, checking, integrating, manipulating, analysing and displaying data related to positions on the Earth's surface. Typically, a Geographical Information System (or Spatial Information System) is used for handling maps of one kind or another. These might be represented as several different layers where each layer holds data about a particular kind of feature. Each feature is linked to a position on the graphical image of a map.
Layers of data are organised to be studied and to perform statistical analysis. Uses are primarily government related, town planning, local authority and public utility management, environmental, resource management, engineering, business, marketing, and distribution.

The National Portrait Gallery was established with the criteria that the Gallery was to be about history, not about art, and about the status of the sitter, rather than the quality or character of a particular image considered as a work of art. This criterion is still used by the Gallery today when deciding which works enter the National Portrait Gallery's collection. Originally, it was decided by the Trustees that "No portrait of any person still living, or deceased less that 10 years, shall be admitted by purchase, donation, or bequest, except only in the case of the reigning Sovereign, and of his or her Consort". This rule changed in 1969 in order to encourage a policy of admitting living sitters.

Q. Is there any way (such as using the "repeat-y" function) to get the background to border down the right as opposed to the left side? also, is there a way to get it to tile down both sides? I am essentially interested in getting the look of a border on both the left and right side of the page, but I want it to appear correctly on all screen resolutions, so of course, making a very long image with the desired left and right backgrounds simply on opposite sides or the image would be impractical.
A. I have one way for this to work; however, it doesn't work in IE 5.5 (I don't currently have access to IE 6 at the moment, but can check later). It does work in NN 6 and above, Mozilla, and Opera. Add two divs to the bottom of your HTML file:
<.div id="left"><./div>
<.div id="right"><./div>
Then add the following CSS:
#left {
position: fixed;
top: 0;
left: 0;
width: 100px;
height: 100%;
border: 1px solid red;
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
background: url(ava.gif) repeat-y top left fixed; }
#right {
position: fixed;
top: 0;
right: 0;
width: 100px;
height: 100%;
border: 1px solid red;
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
background: url(ava.gif) repeat-y top right fixed; }
This will set backgrounds for the two extra divs in your HTML, and should tile the length of the page. IE 5.5 doesn't recognize the "fixed" property for anything other than background images for the BODY tag, so the extra divs scroll with the page.
