Recently, in my spare time, I discovered the world's smallest particle. I named it the "goog" because it weighs exactly one billion to the minus "googol" grams. Is the "goog" infinitesimally small?

Googol (W3)

Die Bezeichnung "googol" für die Zahl 10^100 (10^100, 10 hoch 100, 1 mit 100 Nullen) (auch allgemein für "sehr große Zahl") soll auf den amerikanischen Mathematiker Edward Kasner (1878-1955) zurück gehen, (der mit großen Zahlen arbeitete), und aus dem Jahr 1938 stammen. Kasner wiederum hat den Ausdruck von seinem neunjährigen Neffen, Milton Sirotta, übernommen (der ihn vielleicht - meine eigene Spekulation - in Anlehnung an "gigantisch" für eine "sehr große Zahl" benutzt hat). Auch gab es eine Comicfigur namens "Barney Google", die die Wortbildung beeinflußt haben könnte.

Das sichtbare Universum hat weniger als 10^100 Atome. Die Masse der Erde hat etwa 10^27 Gramm. Ein Proton wiegt 10^(-24) Gramm, so daß die Erde etwa 10^51 Protonen enthält. Die Sonne besteht aus etwa 10^54 Protonen. Falls es 10 Milliarden Galaxien gibt mit je 100 Milliarden Sternen kommt man auf 10^73 Protonen im sichtbaren Universum.

Auf dies Bezeichnung geht die Benennung der Suchmaschine "Google" zurück. Damit sollen die gigantischen Datensammlungen zum Ausdruck gebracht werden.

N! grows astronomically fast. 10! = 3628800. 70! is larger than the Googol, which is a 1 followed by 100 zeros. 100! is a number with 158 digits. So we are fortunate to have a short and handy notation for this number.

Die Titelfigur "Barney Google" - ein kleiner Mann mit großen Augen - entflieht gern seiner Ehefrau und dem häuslichen Alltag, um sich als Zuschauer auf diversen Sportstätten, insbesondere auf der Pferderennbahn, herumzutreiben. Hauptaufgabe seiner deutlich größeren Ehefrau "Lizzie Google" ist, ihn daran zu hindern. Am 17. Juli 1922 wurde Barney Google das Rennpferd Spark Plug zur Seite gestellt, das von Barney häufig zärtlich „brown-eyed baby“ genannt wird und weniger beim Rennen als vielmehr beim Tragen einer Pferdedecke gezeigt wird, aber dennoch ein erfolgreiches Rennpferd ist. In den 1930 Jahren taucht der Hinterwäldler Snuffy Smith regelmäßig in den Comics und dann auch im Titel auf. Als neuer Verlierertyp löste er Barney Google ab.

Google - an originally accidental misspelling of the word googol and settled upon because google.com was unregistered. Googol was proposed to reflect the company's mission to organize the immense amount of information available online.

Googolplex (W3)

In Erweiterung der gigantischen Zahl "Googol", wurde eine noch größere Zahl "Googolplex" = 10^(10^100) = 1 mit einer Googol Nullen, gebildet.
