64-bit-System (W3)

Computer die nach dem "64-bit-System" aufgebaut sind arbeiten mit einer 64-bit-Adressierung und bei jedem Takt werden entsprechend 64 bit gleichzeitig verarbeitet. Durch die 64-bit-Adressierung ergibt sich die theoretische Möglichkeit, dass 2^64 = 4.294.967.296 * 4.294.967.296 Speicherplätze angesprochen werden können.

Bei einem 64-Bit-Computer werden entweder im Prozessor oder auf den Datenleitungen 64 Bit zugleich verarbeitet.

The First Multi-Core, 1GHz Processor
In 2001, IBM retooled the IBM RS/6000 and IBM AS/400 (IBM eServer pSeries and iSeries) systems by updating their core processors. The new processor was called POWER4, and it was the first multi-core, 1GHz processor in history. The high-performance, very-large-scale integration (VLSI) chip included two 64-bit PowerPC microprocessors, connected at high bandwidth to an on-chip memory subsystem with a shared L2-cache memory, and with high-speed busses and I/O to enable efficient 8-way systems. The result: POWER4 was able to operate at a clock frequency greater than 1GHz. IBM research and engineering teams in Yorktown, Poughkeepsie and Austin all contributed to the groundbreaking innovation.

VIIV (W2)

Zu Erklärung der Bedeutung des Markennamens des neuen INTEL-Chips "VIIV", der 2006 herauskam, gibt es mehrere Ansätze.

Zunächst einmal soll es sich zusammensetzen aus engl. "vie" = "konkurrieren", engl. "vibe" = "Ausstrahlung", "Schwingung" und lat. "vive" = "Leben". Damit soll "excitement" = "Aufregung", "vibrancy" = "Schwingen" und "vividness" = "Lebhaftigkeit" zum Ausdruck gebracht werden.

Und Zufall oder Absicht: Die Bezeichnung "VIIV" lässt sich auch als Zusammensetzung der lateinischen Zahlen "VI" = "6" und "IV" = "4" interpretieren. Zusammen kommt man dann auf "64". Und der INTEL-Prozessor basiert auf der 64-bit-Architektur.

Zugegeben - die lateinische Zahl für "64" müsste eigentlich "LXIV" heissen, aber wäre das ein geeigneter Markenname?
