Erde, Earth (W3)
Die "Erde", engl. "Earth", hatte ursprünglich nur die Bedeutung des Stoffes der sich im Garten oder auf dem Feld oder sonst in freier (unverbauter) Natur befindet. In erster Abstraktion stand es dann für den festen Boden, im Gegensatz zu Wasseroberflächen. Schließlich erhielt es dann die Bedeutung "Erdkugel" im Gegensatz zum restlichen Kosmos.

Die "Erde" stellt in der Namensgebung der Himmelskörper eine Ausnahme dar. Sie ist der einzige Planet, dessen Name nicht aus dem Griechischen oder Lateinischen stammt. Man vermutet, dass der Begriff "Erde" seinen Ursprung im germ. "Erda" hat, was "Erde" oder "Grund" bedeutet.
Schon lange bevor man sich Gedanken über das Universum machte bezeichneten die indogermanischen Vorläufer der "Erde" die (schwarze) krümelige Substanz, die man in die Hand nehmen konnte. Als man dann anfing, sich die Erde als Scheibe vorzustellen, verstand man darunter (auch) den "Boden", auf dem man sich bewegte ("ebenerdig", "Erdgeschoss"). Als man schliesslich anfing kosmisch zu denken und die "Erde" als eine Kugel begriff, wurde es (auch) zur Bezeichnung des "Erdballs" im Unterschied zu "Mond" und "Sonne" und anderen Himmelskörpern.
Heute kann "Erde" alle diese Bedeutungen annehmen.

Die "Welt", engl. "World", hieß noch ahd. "weralt" und bedeutet eigentlich "Mannesalter", "Menschenalter" ("wer" = "Mann" und "alt"). Und daraus ergab sich die Bedeutung "Menschheit" und "Welt" im allgemeinen Sinn. Im engl. "World" ist das "r" noch erhalten geblieben.
